Betânia, the 65-year-old stalwart family matriarch, is on a turbulent ride on the ever-shifting sands of time. In the wake of her husband’s death, Betânia is forced to move back to the village where she was born, leaving behind a lifetime of memories. Pushed by the ancestral sounds of Maranhão, Betânia and her family fight to maintain balance and a sense of identity as tradition and modernity collide.
Marcelo Botta has explored storytelling cultures in over 20 countries in regions including the Amazon, Patagonia, the Andes, the Atacama Desert and the Caribbean. His debut feature, Betânia, participated in the First Cut session of Ventana Sur 2022 and won three post-production prizes. He has created and directed documentary and fiction series for Paramount+, MTV, and FOX.
