Special section on Goan films to be screened at IFFI 2017

The 48th Edition of the International Film Festival of India will be featuring a special section that will showcase films by Goan filmmakers. Speaking about this section, Vice chairman of the Entertainment Society of Goa, Rajendra Talak said, “After previewing the films, the jury has recommended Mahaprayan (feature film) produced by Abhay Jog; Marisoul 1998 (non-feature film) produced by Suyash Kamat; Zuzari (non-feature film) produced by Mandar Talauliker; Tiffin Box (non-feature film) produced by Brijesh Kakodkar to be premiered at the festival.”

With Four days to go for the festival, here is a complete look at the films and reactions from the people who helped make it.

1. Marisoul 1998

  Director- Suyash Kamat

Director of this artistic film Suyash Kamat said “Getting my film to premiere at IFFI is definitely a great opportunity. During the first edition, I was part of a dance group which performed on the stages they used to have outside the main venue. We never had any idea of what used to be inside the venue though. After I formally took up filmmaking and understood about film festivals, IFFI became an annual pilgrimage for me & my friends”

Based on the story of Anuja and Viraj, the film beautifully captures the life of two people who are joined by the common search for love and longing. “To finally have my own film premiere here is a small ‘Dream come true’ moment for me. It’s encouraging, for both, the makers & the audience alike to appreciate good homegrown cinema.” he added.

Based on a typical Goan village, the story revolves around the life of Caitu who is suppressed and oppressed by his boss Dadhu Shet. Dadhu is well respected in his village. However,  his employees are the only ones aware of his true nature. Director Brijesh said “Tiffin Box has been a lovely journey. It is my first short feature as the director. It feels amazing as the whole team has worked really hard on the film and this is pleasing to all of us. This is the first time that the film will be seen by the people. And it really feels great that it is happening at one of country’s best film festivals.”

3. Zuzari

Director- Mandar Talauliker

A Non Feature film based on the struggle and triumph of the legendary Goan freedom fighter, Mohan Ranade . Mohan Ranade was convicted for crimes against Portuguese Govt, whereas he was fighting for the sovereignty of his motherland & Liberation for his people. He was part of a revolutionary organisation that took up arms against the Portuguese. For the first five years of prison, he was in Solitary confinement in Panjim. Later he was deported to Portugal. He was the most prized possession for the Portuguese and he was even tagged ‘Ò Dangerous Ó’ by them.

Turning a blind eye to human grounds as Politics, betrayal & apathy took centre stage, this film explores the cruel ordeal for his own freedom.

4. Mahaprayan

Producer- Abhay Jog

This film manages to keep the audience entertained through the story of Tulsidas, whose wife breathes her last in a hospital. With the hospital authorities reluctant to help him move his deceased wife’s body to his village, he faces no choice but to walk the long journey with her body draped over his shoulders.
Apart from highlighting the apathy shown by certain organisations, this film by Abhay Jog is also unique for the fact that it is the first ever ‘Uncut’ feature film in the Konkani film industry. This means that the entire film was shot in one take. No retakes, No editing, once the camera starts rolling, it does not stop till the end. This is quite a feat considering that the movie is 1 hour and 22 minutes long.
